When Hospitals Profit and Patients Pay
A lot of people would look at America's broken health care system and think, ‘Gee, let's try to fix this.’ [But] there are some people who say, ‘Oh good, what an opportunity. This is a great place where I can cheat people out of their money.’” When Ben’s son Alex was having seizures, they took him to get an EEG. The clinic charged them $250. Then the hospital that owned the clinic followed up with a surprise charge for $2,500. All across the country, big hospital corporations have been buying up small, family-owned doctor’s offices so they can jack up prices, asking patients to pay more for the exact same services. Luckily, there’s still time for the current Congress to make a difference by passing bipartisan legislation to protect patients and lower health care costs for families across the country.
